Coaching vs Psychotherapy: Key Differences Explained

How I Work

I offer three types of support, depending on your needs and where you are in your journey — whether you’re looking for focused help with a specific issue, deeper therapeutic work, or forward-looking personal and professional development.

My work is integrative, drawing on a range of established psychological approaches including Jungian, psychodynamic, attachment-based, existential, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, NLP and CBT. This means I tailor the work to you, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model.

Counselling (Short-Term Support)

Counselling is designed to help you work through specific challenges and make practical changes in your life.

We typically work together over 6–12 weekly sessions, each lasting 50 minutes. During this time, you’ll have a confidential space to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and begin to understand how they are connected.

This process can help you:

  • Gain clarity on what’s going on
  • Develop healthier ways of coping
  • Begin to make meaningful changes
  • Feel more confident and in control

This is a good place to start if you’re unsure about longer-term work.

Psychotherapy (Longer-Term, Deeper Work)

Psychotherapy offers a deeper, longer-term exploration of patterns that may be affecting your life.

It is particularly helpful if you are experiencing ongoing difficulties such as anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, the impact of past experiences, or a sense of feeling “stuck.”

Sessions take place weekly (50 minutes) and the work may be open-ended or spaced over time, depending on your needs.

Through psychotherapy, you can:

  • Create lasting emotional and psychological change
  • Understand recurring patterns in thinking, feeling, and behaviour
  • Process past experiences, including trauma or loss
  • Improve relationships with yourself and others

This work unfolds at your pace, with space for reflection and depth.

Developmental Coaching (Future-Focused Growth)

Developmental coaching is a more forward-looking, goal-oriented process, often suited to professionals, leaders, and organisations.

It focuses on helping you grow, adapt, and achieve meaningful change—both personally and professionally.

Sessions are typically 90–120 minutes and take place monthly. Each programme is tailored to your specific goals, with clear outcomes and milestones agreed from the outset.

This work can help you:

  • Create sustainable change for yourself, your organisation, and wider systems
  • Gain clarity on direction and decision-making
  • Overcome internal blockers and limiting patterns
  • Strengthen leadership capability and confidence

This can be particularly valuable during periods of transition, increased responsibility, or change.
